Huge blow for Heed as Knight out

- By JEFF BOWRON

GATESHEAD have been dealt a body blow ahead of the new season with new striker Lewis Knight set to be out for three months.

Knight was brought in for a nominal fee from Notts County this summer after Notts had raided Gateshead for top scorers Macaulay Langstaff and Cedwyn Scott.

The former Leeds United trainee only joined Notts County in 2021 and tore his hamstring in pre-season this time last year.

His pre-season jinx has emerged again with scans on a hip/groin problem, confirming another long period on the sidelines.

Knight, 24, has not featured in any of Gateshead’s three pre-season friendlies, with the Heed at National League North outfit Spennymoor Town today.

Another forward signing,

Aaron Martin, missed out on Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Dunston FC and is unlikely to feature this afternoon.

The experienced frontman should, however, be available for the visit of his former club Harrogate Town next weekend.

Gateshead had, ambitiously, hoped to field two different squads this Tuesday at Hebburn Town and Darlington.

Due to ‘player availability’ issues the Heed will now play only the one fixture, at Hebburn, the club confirming the Quakers cancellation:

“The fixture at Blackwell Meadows has regrettably been cancelled due to player availability leaving us unable to fulfil two fixtures simultaneously.”

Former Newcastle, Morecambe and Notts County forward

Adam Campbell, meanwhile, is set return to action this afternoon.

The 27-year-old has been recovering from an MCL injury in the side of his knee for the last 11 weeks.

“I have trained this week without any flare-ups, so I’ll be involved at the Brewery Field,” said Campbell.

“I missed the last two games of last season and then had the summer to recuperate, so it’s good to be up and running again.”
