NEWCASTLE United defender Emil Krafth has signed a one-year extension at St James’ Park, writes LEE RYDER.

The Sweden international provides quality competition for Kieran Trippier and enjoyed a good end to last season when covering for the England star.

Krafth’s deal was struck during the team’s stay in Portugal.

Krafth is now contracted until 2024 and is delighted with the new arrangement.

The defender said: “I am very, very happy to extend my contract here – me and my family love to live here – and to continue with the journey we have started with the club.

“I am really looking forward to the future at the club.”

Head coach Eddie Howe was also delighted with the news.

He said: “I am very pleased

Emil has extended his stay with us.

“He made an excellent contribution to the team last season and he continues to add valuable strength to us.”

A United statement read: “The Swedish full-back, whose current agreement with United was due to expire next summer, has agreed a new deal which will keep him at St James’ Park until June 2024.”

Newcastle’s other right-back Javier Manquillo has not featured in pre-season so far. The Spaniard has been receiving treatment for an injury in Madrid.

BENFICA star Chiquinho has revealed his excitement at facing Newcastle United in the Eusebio Cup final in Lisbon this evening.

The 27-year-old attacking midfielder was mobbed by Benfica fans after they invaded the field at the end of their 4-2 win over Girona last week in Switzerland - but now they move back on to the bigger stage at the Estadio da Luz for their final friendly of pre-season.

After fans invaded the field, Chiquinho said: “It is a sign that our fans believe in us.

“It is a good feeling but we now have to keep that going.

“Now we look forward to the Eusebio Cup. We really want to show ourselves to our fans on Tuesday.

“We want to play a good game to make them happy.”

Benfica are bidding to win the Eusebio Cup for the first time since 2012 when they thumped Real Madrid in the showpiece in Lisbon.

The Portuguese club have confirmed the trophy will be presented to the winners tonight.
