Ashworth prepares to jump ship at crucial time for the club

about different matters unfolding at St James’ Park. In recent days, the Newcastle boss has changed his tune, insisting he has not had any contact with his fellow staff member since the Manchester United speculation had reemerged.

There was little praise for the man at the centre of the saga in Friday’s pre-bournemouth press conference either. Instead, a backhanded comment from Howe about ‘stability’ being key in the role Ashworth possesses.

“It’s a difficult one because when you’re in that role I think you need longevity to actually see the fruits of your labour,” Howe said. “It’s sort of a long-term position and the people who have done it best in the Premier League throughout time have always had a period of real stability, because change takes a long time at any football club to get those processes exactly how you want them to be.

Then there is the matter of the compensation package desired.

All in all it feels, at this early stage, as though Newcastle are playing a blinder and holding all the cards with their swift action. 1) Demand top dollar for Ashworth’s services. 2) Install a lengthy cooling off period as not to strengthen a rival immediately. 3) Have the manager publicly and subtly play down his exit. 4) Release a statement to show work is already being done behind the scenes to continue to positive work achieved in recent seasons.

There will no doubt be a tinge of sadness from many within the club. Ashworth possesses many talents and has worked wonders wherever he has ended up. His premature, seemingly imminent, exit makes it hard to judge just how successful he has been at St James’ Park.
