Tri star needs backing to race on world stage

Phillips could miss out on glory bid due to lack of funding

A NORTH East triathlon talent could miss out on the chance of world glory – unless he can secure vital cash backing, writes TONY HODGSON.

Sunderland teenager Matthew Phillips has won a dream call-up to the World Triathlon Series in Rotterdam in September.

But he is struggling raise the cash needed for the trip to Holland – but hopes Geordie generosity can come to his rescue.

The 16-year-old said: “I have been relying so heavily on my family to get me to events but competing is an expensive business.

“I need over £300 just to enter the event and then there is the cost of travelling there and back and three nights’ accommodation.

“If anyone is interested in backing me I would be very grateful.

“It will be my first time at the Series and I am looking forward to competing.”

Matthew’s aunt Emma-Jane Phillips said: “My brother Gareth and his family have given up everything to pay for Matthew’s training, trials, kit and equipment.

“Then they receive an email asking for the entrance fee to the Series, which is 10 times the normal race entry free – this is on top of the hotel and travel which also has to be funded.

“There is no funding available until you get into the full Team GB squad but you need support to get there.

“The reason there are not more Olympians from the north is not the lack of talent, it is the fact we live in a poor area and parents cannot afford to get their kids there.”

Phillips is a member of the Sunderland-based Sun City Triathlon Club and one of five triathletes in the North East Regional Academy.

He was one of four triathletes to clinch a spot in the GB squad at a qualifying event in Llandudno.

He added: “I did not expect to make it as it is an under-20 competition and I am just 16 – and there were lot of good triathletes involved.

“I am hoping I can do quite well in Rotterdam. To finish in the top 20 would be great but I have my sights set on a top-10 place.”

Phillips has been involved in triathlon for three years – taking up swimming when he was eight before adding running and cycling to his repertoire.

He has competed in the Elite Super Series for two years, taking part in races across the country.
