TODAY WE TALK TO DINNINGTON SCOUT GROUP

-

What will you do with this year’s Wish money?

This year we are looking to use money raised from the Wish fund to assist us in funding the various camps and outdoor activities that we provide for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

Tell us about your group.

The 1st Dinnington Scout Group has been running since 1933 and is for young people from the age of six to 14 in the Beavers, Cubs and Scout sections of the movement.

We generally have around 50 young people spread through the three sections. These groups are run by five leaders supported by an executive committee and several occasional helpers, who bring their own individual skills to the group.

What kind of activities take place at your group?

Activities to promote life skills, team-working and citizenship.

Who is the longest serving member of your group?

Joyce Porter (the group Scout leader) with more than 50 years involvement in various roles.

Tell us about the biggest or best activity or event your group has organised.

The attainment of the angling badge by five of our Scouts was a great achievement. It was the first time in many years that any Scouts in Newcastle District have gained this award.

What is your group’s proudest moment to date?

We have had to manage the demolition of our old hut, fundraise and build a new hut, while running run regular meetings and off-site activities and camps.

Why should someone join your group?

Young people can learn valuable life skills in a fun and safe environment, interacting with other young people and other members of the community.

What makes you proud to be from the North-east using five words?

Community spirited, opportunities, enthusiastic, genuine.
