We want more cyle routes, insist people of Newcastle
THREE out of four folk in Newcastle want more protected bike routes even if it means less space for cars, according to a new report.
Of the 1,100 people questioned for Bike Life, the UK’s biggest assessment of cycling in cities, 74% said they’d support more protected lanes to allow safer cycling.
The report, which is commissioned every two years by Sustrans and Newcastle City Council, also revealed 56% would cycle more if on-road bike routes were physically separated from traffic.
People also want more space for cycling, walking or buses, as opposed to more space for cars.
Nearly two-thirds (65%) of people said more cycling would make the city a better place to live and work.
A total of 40% of residents interviewed across the city said cycling in Newcastle is good with only 29% saying it is safe with children.
The results showed 27% of residents don’t currently ride a bike, but would like to, and two-thirds (69%) support more investment in cycling.
