Elderly man dies following illness on plane

AN elderly plane passenger who fell ill on his flight to Newcastle has died.

An 81-year-old man became ill on board Jet2 flight LS518 from Tenerife to Newcastle on Sunday night, Airlive reported.

The Boeing 737-800 plane was diverted to Cork Airport.

When the plane landed at 7.15pm in Cork, the man was rushed to the terminal and immediatel­y received treatment from medical staff.

Despite the efforts of medics however, the man was pronounced dead shortly after landing.

All passengers on the flight were brought to the departure hall, where they waited until a replacemen­t flight arrived.

The replacemen­t flight for the remaining passengers arrived at 10.30pm and took them on to Newcastle.
