North East sides out of Vase – but Robins rock in League Cup

TOW Law Town ex­ited the FA Vase at the sec­ond round stage af­ter a 5-1 de­feat at North West Coun­ties League side 1874 North­wich.

Lewis Teas­dale got a con­so­la­tion goal for the Lawyers, as their brave Vase run came to an end in Cheshire.

Sun­der­land RCA were also knocked out of the com­pe­ti­tion by ten-man Run­corn Lin­nets.

Ross Pre­ston gave RCA the lead just be­fore half-time, ten min­utes af­ter their vis­i­tors were re­duced to ten-men when Mitchell Bryant was shown a straight red-card.

Danny O’Brien got the Lin­nets back on level-terms with a penalty and the North West Coun­ties League side won it thanks to a late goal from winger Mark Houghton.

Gareth Bain­bridge scored twice for the sec­ond game in a row as North Shields came away from in-form Marske United with an im­pres­sive 3-2 win in the North­ern League Cup.

The Robins came from be­hind af­ter Glen But­ter­worth gave Marske an early-lead. Bain­bridge’s brace and Dean Holmes 100th goal for the club saw the Robins through to the third round, de­spite Adam Wheat­ley pulling one back for the hosts.

Mark Fitz­patrick and David Hif­tle helped Dun­ston UTS se­cure a 2-0 win at New­ton Ay­cliffe.

Whick­ham and New­cas­tle Ben­field re­mained goal­less in the 90 min­utes of their tie at the Glebe.

How­ever, it was Di­vi­sion One side Ben­field that pro­gressed with a 5-4 win in a penalty shoot-out.
