North East sides out of Vase – but Robins rock in League Cup

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

TOW Law Town exited the FA Vase at the second round stage after a 5-1 defeat at North West Counties League side 1874 Northwich.

Lewis Teasdale got a consolation goal for the Lawyers, as their brave Vase run came to an end in Cheshire.

Sunderland RCA were also knocked out of the competition by ten-man Runcorn Linnets.

Ross Preston gave RCA the lead just before half-time, ten minutes after their visitors were reduced to ten-men when Mitchell Bryant was shown a straight red-card.

Danny O’Brien got the Linnets back on level-terms with a penalty and the North West Counties League side won it thanks to a late goal from winger Mark Houghton.

Gareth Bainbridge scored twice for the second game in a row as North Shields came away from in-form Marske United with an impressive 3-2 win in the Northern League Cup.

The Robins came from behind after Glen Butterworth gave Marske an early-lead. Bainbridge’s brace and Dean Holmes 100th goal for the club saw the Robins through to the third round, despite Adam Wheatley pulling one back for the hosts.

Mark Fitzpatrick and David Hiftle helped Dunston UTS secure a 2-0 win at Newton Aycliffe.

Whickham and Newcastle Benfield remained goalless in the 90 minutes of their tie at the Glebe.

However, it was Division One side Benfield that progressed with a 5-4 win in a penalty shoot-out.
