River search is set to continue after man’s fall
THE man who fell into the River Tyne from the Swing Bridge was still missing as police temporarily halted their search.
In the early hours of Friday morning, officers were first called to the Swing Bridge with concern for a man’s welfare.
When they arrived at around 1.15am he then fell into the river below.
Two police divers carried out a search of the river near to the Millennium Bridge and the marine unit returned to the Quayside on Saturday to continue the efforts.
However yesterday a spokesman for Northumbria Police confirmed that nothing had been found.
He said: “Our inquiries are continuing regarding the disappearance of the male but no search is ongoing today.
“His family have been kept fully updated by ourselves and we will continue until further information comes to light.”
The spokesman added that searches were set to resume in the coming week.
