Aycliffe inflict surprise loss on Stockton

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

JUST three Northern League games survived the wet conditions over the weekend.

In Division One, Stockton Town’s FA Vase semi-final preparations took a setback when they were surprisingly beaten at home by Newton Aycliffe.

Thibault Charmey gave Aycliffe a third-minute lead with a wellstruck free-kick but Sonni Coleman got the Anchors back on level terms six minutes later.

Ben Trotter restored Aycliffe’s lead 10 minutes before half-time with a neat finish from 20 yards.

Aycliffe keeper James Winter helped his side to all three points with key saves from Coleman and Jamie Owens.

Stockton will hope to put the defeat behind them this weekend when they travel to Marske United in the first-leg of their FA Vase semi-final tie.

Penrith put some daylight between themselves and the relegation zone with a comfortable 3-0 home win against Team Northumbria.

Second-half goals from Jonny Murray and Martyn Coleman added to Grant Davidson’s first-half strike to help the Bonny Blues to a valuable three points.

Penrith are four points clear of third-bottom Jarrow Roofing, although the Roofers do have four games in hand.

West Allotment Celtic moved away from the lower reaches of Division Two with a 2-1 win over Chester-le-Street Town.

Dean Walker set up Ryan McGorrigan for West Allotment’s first goal on the hour mark.

Walker then got his second assist of the day with the game moving into added time as his perfectly weighted through-ball gave Jonathon Hirst a chance to grab a debut goal.

Mark Peck pulled a goal back in injury time but it wasn’t enough to deny West all three points.
