BEST OF THE REST
MARTIN LUTHER KING BY TREVOR MCDONALD ITV, 9pm
MARKING the 50th anniversary since Martin Luther King was assassinated in April 1968, this moving documentary explores the extraordinary life of the civil rights icon.
“Were he alive today, he would probably be on the march again. This time against inequality and injustice, the twin evils that still scar millions of black American lives,” says Sir Trevor McDonald, pictured, who travels to America to cover the story he has always wanted to know more about.
Starting with the monumental ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech in Washington, this films sees Sir Trevor discover how King became a Civil Rights leader almost by accident.
He also visits King’s first marital home as well as the motel in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was killed, aged just 39.
But most compelling is an interview with a former Ku Klux Klan member, who confesses that in a different life he would have targeted Sir Trevor because of the colour of his skin.
NOT GOING OUT BBC1, 8.30pm
ONE tiny problem escalates into a farcical nightmare yet again, as Lee and Lucy (Lee Mack and Sally Bretton, pictured,) continue to navigate family life.
This time it’s the small matter of a missing toy keyring that sends their bristling relationship with friends Toby and Anna (Hugh Dennis and Abigail Cruttenden) from occasional judgemental comment to full-on feud.
Lee and Lucy’s son Charlie proudly announces that he won the ugly face competition. His prize? A light-up keyring. But Toby and Anna’s son Jack is jealous and wants one. Enough to steal it?
The entire plot essentially boils down to one line, but even when you can see what’s coming a mile off, it’s still funny.
Parents will understand the hours upon hours spent searching for the latest toy to avoid a child’s meltdown. And the seething resentment between Toby and Anna is comedy at its best.
