Recycling may be sorted at depot

-

IN response to yesterday’s letter from Olya Bowers about

rubbish collection in Byker.

Last year we collected and treated over 142,000 tonnes of waste, more per resident than other UK cities, with an increase in Newcastle’s recycling rates up 4% to 42%.

Occasionally a single-bodied vehicle may be used, in this case the snow and ice caused disruption to our normal collection services. If recycling is mixed with general waste then material is separated at the Byker Waste Transfer facility as part of our contract.

Advice to residents is that glass should always be collected separately and residents are provided with either a caddy for their glass or in communal arrangements, a separate bin for this purpose.

The Newcastle Waste Commission has recently set ambitious targets for the city, and the council will work with partners to implement as many of the recommendations as possible.

We are firmly committed to reducing the amount of waste our city produces. Coun NICK KEMP, Newcastle City Council cabinet member, neighbourhoods & regulatory

services
