Police witness appeal after fatal collision

AN elderly man has died after being hit by a car in Stanley.

The man, who has not been named, was struck by a Toyota Auris driven by a woman on Scott Street in the County Durham town.

Police and paramedics were called just before 11am yesterday with the air ambulance also landing at the scene.

The motorist was not believed to be injured.

Police tape was put up around the street after the crash and a white forensic tent could also be seen.

Officers are now asking anyone who witnessed the collision or captured dashcam footage to come forward.

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoma­n said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision in the Front Street area of Stanley at 10.56am this morning.

“We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance, an advanced practition­er, two hazardous area response teams and we requested back up from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.”
