Bath Lane, near the city’s West Walls, was cordoned off after the suspected assault late on Thursday night.

There have been no arrests so far, according to the police, who don’t believe any weapons were used in the assault.

A police spokesperson told the Chronicle yesterday: “At 11.15pm last night police received a report of an assault on Bath Lane, in the city centre of Newcastle.

The police tape covered a large area around Bath Lane and locals have spoken of their shock at the incident.

Charlie Hedley, from Clayton House, explained how he saw a man lying injured following the assault.

He said that he saw the man, who he guessed to be aged in his 20s, lying on the floor with wounds to the back of his head.

Mr Hedley says paramedics arrived and took the injured man away on a stretcher.

Another man, who works in a nearby restaurant and wished to remain anonymous, said: “I hope the lad is OK and he pulls through.

“It’s worrying when something like this happens.”
