Anglican liturgist?
Archbishop Cordileone of San Francisco made headlines in religious newspapers all around the world when his Episcopalian opposite number was not given a seat for his installation. Bishop Marc Andrus walked out but officials of the Catholic Archdiocese said there had been a misunderstanding and there was no intention to snub the bishop. Sceptics thought the incident was a response to a barbed letter from Bishop Andrus in which he had told San Francisco’s gay Catholics that they were welcome in the Episcopal Church if they were dismayed by their new Archbishop’s views on sexuality. Now Archbishop Cordileone has been in London helping to draw up a new Eucharistic rite for the Anglican Ordinariate. The Archbishop is a member of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith and of the Congregation for Divine Worship. From comments the Archbishop made, it looks as if the Comfortable Words and the Confession before offertory will be retained. According to the Archbishop, Anglicans in the Ordinariate want to be in the Catholic Church because of the clarity of its teaching but they want to retain their Anglican worship and spirituality. Those familiar with the Ordinariate point out that many of the clergy who have joined it were more familiar in their Church of England days with the Roman Catholic rite than they were with Anglican rites. The new Anglican rite is due out in a year’s time.
