Freedom of expression

-

Sir, Freedom of expression must surely be a good thing, provided it is not downright insulting or despicably aimed against those who cannot defend themselves? Consequently, I find a past Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral - who appears to have used his previous status to publicly belittle a newly deceased Prime Minister, ‘not as yet buried at the time!’ – both offensive and disgusting.

One cannot help but wonder how such a fellow priest ever got through both a past selection conference or a theological college in order to enter the Christian ministry! Indeed, if anyone lacks the very basics of Christian virtue as further expressed through the ‘gifts of the Spirit’ then, surely, all appendages - before or after one’s name – become no more than a mockery to that person’s vocation?

However, Giles Fraser is not alone here. I sense there are many prominent clergy with past prestigious positions who, on reaching the pearly gates, will hear the words: “I know you not!” Yes, while many a lowly cleric - with little more than a heart of empathy to commend him - will hear the words “Enter thou, in to the joy of your Lord!”

Oh yes Giles, Margaret Thatcher had her faults, and acknowledged many of them herself, but – at least – let her be ‘put to rest with dignity’ before you start using your own ‘muck rake’ upon her!
