Real ale pub put on the market after death of owner
AN award-winning brew pub, famous for its ever-changing collection of ales from all over the country, has been put on the market.
The Star Inn at Crowlas, near Penzance, is up for sale for £775,000 and comes with the microbrewery at the back as well as owners’ accommodation and space to expand.
The decision to sell followed the death of publican and brewer Pete Elvin on Christmas Eve after a fiveyear battle with cancer.
With his partner Tracey he had bought the well-known real ale pub 25 years ago, and 10 years later set up the Penzance Brewing Company at the back.
Last month it was announced on its Facebook page that the business was to close and the pub would be put up for sale.
At the time the pub’s team said: “Following the recent loss of Pete and after an amazing 25-year run of owning and running the Star Inn, the difficult decision to close the doors has been taken.
“The pub will close after last orders on Thursday, February 29. We appreciate the disappointment this will have for many but hope you’ll understand the position we find ourselves in.
“In the coming weeks, after some essential maintenance and repairs, both the Star Inn and Penzance Brewing Company will be put on the market. The brewery will continue to operate and service a good number of pubs in the local area, with scope to take on a few more regular pubs.
“We hope that we’re able to find suitable buyers to take both the pub and the brewery forwards to recognise their full potential and remain the heart of the community.
“We’d like to thank you all for your loyalty and support over the years.”
A spokesman for estate agency Miller Commercial, which is handling the sale, said: “Opportunities such as these are rare to the market: an award-winning brewery, free house with accommodation and the opportunity to expand the business.
“The Star Inn has been recognised since 2000 by Camra and present in the Good Beer Guide since 2002, where it has remained for the last 23 years.
“On the premises there’s a small set of barns which in 2008 saw the Penzance Brewing Company being formed, and this has gone on to successfully provide 20% of the revenue through the Star Inn itself and the remaining 80% of the revenue servicing 15 pubs in the local area.”
