Pop in to pop-up art exhibition

-

ARTISTS from West Penwith have joined forces to mount their own pop-up show at the Wharfside Centre in Penzance.

Colour My Life, featuring paintings, ceramics and textiles by the seven members of the West Penwith Artists’ Collective, is in Unit 7 of the shopping centre for at least six weeks and open Monday to Saturday from 10.30am to 4.30pm, with new exhibits being added during the run.

Maria McEwen, former director of the Pop Up Penzance community interest company, helped set up the project with support from the town’s Business Improvement District.

A spokesperson for the group said the show had come about “thanks to the vision of Tom Marsden of the Wharfside Centre, who is keen to bring community activity and local businesses together in this reimagined space.

“The artists are all committed to making art accessible in the Penzance community in a variety of ways, and this is their first collaboration.

“They’re planning a series of workshops and talks based around their specialist art styles, which will be open to public participation”.

Peter Kinkead, one of the group’s founder members, said: “The location is perfect for locals and visitors alike to walk in while out and about shopping in Penzance, enjoy the art and hopefully find something they like.

“We’re a very friendly and inclusive group and everyone is welcome to come in and browse and to chat about the art with the artists, who will man the gallery.

“This is a big unit and we want to use it fully to create something new here. All the members are excited by this opportunity.”

Maria McEwen said: “This space is amazing for use as a gallery and we’re working on ideas of how to create a real community-friendly programme, and see where that takes us.

“It feels like Penzance has recently started to bounce back with exciting and colourful new bars, cafés and shops and it’s looking like things are changing for the better”.
