Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting your seasonal COVID-19 vaccination
FROM 22ND APRIL 2024, INDIVIDUALS AGED 75 YEARS AND OVER ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THEIR SPRING COVID-19 TOP-UP VACCINE
PEOPLE aged 75 and over are encouraged by the NHS to receive the latest COVID-19 top-up vaccination as they are at an increased risk of complications and hospitalisation when catching the virus.
This proactive measure is crucial as their immune systems may struggle to combat viruses effectively, heightening the risk of severe illness or even death. Furthermore, COVID-19 can exacerbate existing health conditions, amplifying the likelihood of serious, life-threatening complications.
Iain Davidson, chief pharmacist for Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS trust, said: “It is important to top up your immunity if you are aged 75 years and over, as we understand you are at a higher risk of developing severe illness if you catch COVID-19.
“We also know that immunity decreases over time so please take this opportunity to top up your immunity from
April 22. Furthermore, the vaccination has been updated to target emerging variants so the top-up dose is essential to bolster your immunity ahead of the summer.”
It takes two weeks for immunity to develop post-vaccination, making it imperative to protect yourself and others by getting your seasonal top-up vaccination from April 22.
The safety of the vaccines has been extensively reviewed by the UK’s independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The MHRA is continuously monitoring the safety of the COVID-19 vaccines, and reports of serious side effects are very rare.
Millions of adults and children in the UK have had a COVID-19 vaccine without safety concerns and it is proven to give you the best protection against COVID-19.
NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly underscores the vital importance of vaccines in safeguarding those most susceptible to severe illness, and emphases the necessity of not becoming complacent. It urges eligible individuals to plan ahead and get the spring top-up vaccine as soon as possible after
April 22, and help protect Cornwall’s healthcare system.
