Arbroath Fireworks committee is celebrating after raising more than £8,000 for this year’s event.

The sum means the display will definitely go ahead but organiser Karren Cuthill hopes for more donations to ensure an even more spectacular show.

She said: “The money we’ve got just now would do a nice little display but the more funds we bring in means more fireworks – it wouldn’t be a longer display, just more of them.

“We are using the same company as last year, 21st Century Fireworks, who did a really good job.

“We have just over £8,000 in the bank but we have already paid out some of the big things like insurance and first aid. We’ve also paid a 10% deposit to 21st Century Fireworks.”

This year’s fireworks display will take place on Saturday November 5 at Inchcape Park at 6.30pm.

Like last year, which attracted more than 6,000 people, there will be no charge for attending, although there will be a bucket collection.

That collection kickstarted fundraising for this year’s event.

The fireworks committee has held street collections, bag packs, car boot sales, quizzes and sponsored events.

Arbroath councillor Ewan Smith donated his travel expenses to the charity.

A large raffle will be held, with around 90 prizes submitted by the business community in Arbroath so far, including a £500 voucher from kitchens, bathroom and bedrooms shop CNG Design.

The company has operated an outlet in Laurencekirk for the past two-and-ahalf years but is now planning a pop-up shop to showcase its designs in Arbroath.

Sales director Chris Graham said: “It’s a chance for us to show people in Arbroath what we do from a unit at the Abbeygate Centre. We’ll be there for a month, or two.

“Karren will come to the opening with some members of the committee to sell their raffle tickets. We are also planning our own small raffle when we open on September 3.”

The more funds we bring in means more fireworks. KARREN CUTHILL
