Apart from its historical links with golf, St Andrews is one of Scotland’s most charming towns to explore. Walking around The Scores, with the wide sweep of St Andrews Bay set against the ruins of the town, evokes a feeling of being on a film set.

Five scenic glens – Isla, Prosen, Clova, Lethnot and Esk – cut into the hills along the southern fringes of the Cairngorms National Park, accessible from Kirriemuir in Angus. All boast stunning scenery, though each glen has its own distinct personality.

The village of Blair Atholl in Perthshire is great for a weekend break. Blair Castle is arguably the main attraction, but there’s also the Atholl Country Life Museum, the old watermill, and many superb walks in the surrounding countryside and into the mountains.

The East Neuk of Fife is an appealing nook of the country to visit, with picturesque fishing villages whose distinctive red-pantiled roofs and crowstep gables are a legacy of centuries-old trading links with the Low Countries.

The lovely village of Dunkeld sits on the banks of the River Tay. Dominated by the cathedral, you can’t miss the brightly coloured ‘little houses’ which were built in the early 1700s. And next door is Birnam, which boasts the Beatrix Potter exhibition.
