100 years ago

The Dunblane and Bridge of Allan districts were visited by a very pronounced earthquake shock on Saturday. About 3.45pm the inhabitant­s of Dunblane were alarmed by a peculiar rumbling noise. Then a distinct trembling of the earth was felt and houses were shaken to their foundation­s. This lasted about eight seconds. In Bridge of Allan the sensation was similar to that experience­d on former occasions – a sudden jar followed by a slight vibration. The shock was distinctly felt in the village.

50 years ago

The toll of dead and injured at Aberfan, Glamorgan, which was struck by a coal bing avalanche yesterday, is expected to reach 166. A Welsh Office spokesman denied an earlier statement that three children had been found alive in the school late last night. The casualty section set up in a classroom a few yards from the collapsed school, on the other side of the playground, was still operating. But one of the medical officers said: “I very much fear that we shall not be dealing with any of the children.”

In the musical world, the accordion is regarded as a respected and popular musical instrument. But in the field of classical music, it has been largely scorned. Over the last few years, however, a former Dundee man has been at the forefront of a new wave of respect in classical circles. James Crabb, whose parents James and Violet live in Lochee, is back in his home town to perform at the Caird Concert in the Bonar Hall tomorrow. James took up the traditiona­l accordion at the age of four.

A Dundee charity set up to help Syrian refugees is to deliver tens of thousands of bars of soap to people stranded in Serbia. Dundee Refugee Support, set up in the wake of the ongoing crisis that has seen thousands escape conflict in Syria by fleeing to Europe, will be helping deliver 63,000 bars to the 400,000 estimated people stuck in refugee camps at the Serbian border. The mammoth delivery was paid for in part by the donations of generous Taysiders, who DRS admit have taken them aback.
