Clarity must emerge from Brexit chaos
It is understood Theresa May will today offer to involve Scotland (along with Wales and Northern Ireland) in regular and formal talks on the Brexit process. Many voters will think it is just as well and not before time.
Theresa May has come under heavy fire for her Brexit strategy – or perhaps more accurately the apparent lack of one.
However, the blame surely lies every bit as much with her predecessor at Number 10.
The complacency of the UK Government prior to the June 23 EU referendum was quite staggering.
It appears little, or possibly even no, consideration was given to the consequences or indeed possibility of a Leave vote.
To be fair even the most ardent campaigners were taken by surprise – who could forget Nigel Farage conceding defeat in the early hours of the 24th, only to emerge in a state of bewildered contentment a few hours later when it emerged the pollsters had got it spectacularly wrong?
Against such a chaotic backdrop, the involvement of the devolved governments of other UK nations can only be a welcome development.
Yes, there will be many potentially divisive voices round the table and negotiations will not be easy.
Surely, however, we can all expect they will be united in thrashing out the best possible deal for all parts of the UK? Surely?
