Dismay: Iron Mike Towell’s mum slams boxer’s threats

The mother of tragic Dundee boxer Mike Towell has slammed fighter David Haye for telling WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew he would put him in hospital.

Mike’s mum Tracey said Haye had “let himself down badly” by saying Bellew would leave the ring on a stretcher after Saturday’s heavyweight bout.

Dad of one Mike, 25, died after collapsing with bleeding on the brain during a televised fight against Welshman Dale Evans in Glasgow in September. The Dundee fighter had previously complained of headaches but was advised it was a migraine.

Bellew, who has already given support to Mike’s family, has criticised Haye’s pre-fight comments, saying his threats harm the reputation of boxing.

Tracey said: “There’s a real hatred between Haye and Bellew – but the things Haye is saying aren’t clever.

“It sounds like Haye has taken too many punches to say things like that.

“If he understood what happened to Michael and saw what happened to Nick Blackwell and other boys, you would think he wouldn’t say things like this. “But Haye’s let himself down badly.” Tracey, 51, and Mike’s partner Chloe Ross will be supporting Bellew when he fights Haye at London’s O2 Arena.

Tracey added: “Michael was a huge fan of Tony. At his first fight after Michael died, Tony wore a T-shirt in the ring saying ‘RIP Iron Mike’ which he donated to us. We’re keeping it for Michael’s son Rocco.”

Chloe said: “I’ve heard some of the things Haye has said. But hopefully they will end up shaking hands.”

Tracey and Chloe, 24, are raising £13,000 to buy a brain scanner for other fighters in Mike’s memory and are planning a skydive to boost funds.
