Swifts earn vital points in shock win over Kelty

First league defeat of season for Fife outfit

- PeTer rundo

Jeanfield Swifts produced the shock of day, if not the season, by inflicting the first league defeat of the season suffered by Kelty Hearts with a 2-1 victory at New Central Park.

It is a result that could be of huge significance as it gives Ross Gunnion’s side genuine hope of at least avoiding the two automatic relegation slots.

Swifts went ahead after 15 minutes courtesy of a Tony Holt penalty.

With Murray Carstairs red-carded for the foul on Lewis Baker that led to the award, the Fifers were a goal and a man down.

Five minutes later, there was more woe for the hosts as Swifts doubled their lead. Holt was the provider, setting up Keith Dewar to fire home from close range.

Though outnumbered, Kelty piled on the pressure but Swifts held firm and the Craig Thomson goal they did concede, coming two minutes from time, was too little, too late.

Carnoustie made it one defeat in 12 league games with a point from an entertaining 2-2 draw with Dundonald Bluebell at Laing Park. All the goals came in the first half. Carnoustie took the lead after 18 minutes when Robert Urquhart buried a 25-yarder.

Three minutes later it was 2-0 after Bluebell keeper James Lennox could only parry a Gordon Macdonald shot and the Panmure hitman was on hand to knock home the rebound.

The visitors pulled one back on 35 minutes when Craig Wedderburn headed home.

Dundonald were level eight minutes before the break when Super League leading scorer Lewis McKenzie steered a shot beyond Alan Cormack.

Broughty’s long wait for a win continues, but they could take plenty positives, despite Bo’ness taking home all three points thanks to the only goal in a game of few chances.

It came midway through the second half, Fraser Keast tapping in at the far post, and extends the Fed’s winless run to nine matches.

But boss Keith Gibson would have been encouraged after a disciplined display by his side, which included new signing Drew Fleming from Tayport,
