Wasps will feel Fifers’ frustrations

Barry Smith has urged his East Fife side to take out any disappointment at dropping two points on Saturday on Alloa this week.

The Fifers returned from Balmoor with what was a decent point, but the Methil club will be kicking themselves at letting the hosts grab an equaliser after having led.

The Fifers are now 10 league games undefeated, but boss Smith says any anger can be released on the Wasps when they meet tomorrow night.

Smith said: “It’s a point that we probably would have taken at the start of the day because this is a difficult place to come. But the disappointment in the dressing room is that we were 1-0 up and should have defended properly.

“The confidence should still be high because it shows how far this team has come that we’re disappointed about going to a place like Peterhead and only getting a point.

“We now have to use that as motivation for the next game and that comes very quick.

“We have a couple of injuries which means we may be low on numbers come Tuesday.

“Sometimes we know we can play a bit better but if you’re not playing well and you work hard then you give yourself a chance.”

Remarkably the Blue Toon started the game just a point off the relegation zone but within a four-point touching distance of the fourth-placed Fifers.

The small margin shows just how tight League One is, and during the early stages neither side got on top.

The Fifers gradually grew into the game and Chris Duggan was flagged offside as he was set to pull the trigger.

Smith’s men stayed on the front foot and Graeme Smith was forced into a smart stop from a Mark Lamont free-kick.

The home side hadn’t shown much in an attacking sense but, on the stroke of half-time, Ryan Goodfellow was forced into a save by Scott Brown.

The Fifers took the lead moments into the second half. James Penrice whipped in a cross which Kevin Smith nodded into the home net.

The opener woke the hosts from their slumbers and Rory McAllister’s free-kick clipped the post.

But barely a minute later they were level when a Grant Anderson cross found Jordan Brown to head home the equaliser.
