Impressive Doris delighted while Fox left disappointed

- ARBROATH 4 COWDENBEATH 1

Arbroath striker Steven Doris played a key role in blowing away Cowdenbeath as he turned in a storming performance which deservedly earned him the man-of-the match award.

The former St Johnstone and Dundee player scored one of the Lichties’ four goals and put in a highly energetic shift.

“I’m delighted with the result and hopefully we can kick on next week when we have a very tough game against Elgin,” he said.

“I had a slow start this season but I feel I’m coming on to a game now. This is my first time working under Dick (Campbell) and I’m relishing it.

“I’m glad he brought me back. I enjoyed my first spell here and it was great to win the league, so hopefully we can do that again. But we are taking it one game at a time.”

The Lichties cruised to victory after taking an early lead, Martin Scott slotting beyond Jamie Sneddon in the fourth minute.

Home keeper Ricky Gomes almost gifted Cowdenbeath an immediate equaliser when he lost possession while trying to usher the ball out, but the visitors failed to capitalise.

Arbroath went further ahead in the 29th minute, Doris getting on the end of a brilliant cross from Bobby Linn.

The Gayfield men scored again 10 minutes after the restart, Liam Henderson directing a cross from Jassem Sukar into his own net.

Gavin Malin made it 4-0 with a shot from the edge of the box which Sneddon fumbled over the line.

Cowdenbeath grabbed a late consolation, Scott Rumsby firing home with the final kick of the game.

It was a woeful performance from the Blue Brazil, who are now rooted to the foot of the table.

Boss Liam Fox said: “I cannot defend this performance. Everyone needs to ask themselves if they are doing enough. It’s unacceptable. “We need to be stronger mentally. “I demand a desire for players to put themselves on the line for their teammates and for the club. That wasn’t there today and that’s my biggest disappointment.”
