LEAGUE ONE: City back in play-off hunt after securing first victory of 2017

-

Brechin recorded their first win of 2017 when they stormed back from the loss of an early goal to beat Queen’s Park at Glebe Park last night.

The win takes Brechin above the Spiders in the League One table and on to the fringe of the play-off places.

Brechin boss Darren Dods said: “That was a great three points.

“We created lots of chances and I am delighted for Andy Jackson who was a handful all night.

“Queen’s Park were fresh having not played for 10 days, but the win is a great boost.

“We have six of our final 11 games at home and our home form is good.

“We will rest and go again and keep our challenge going.”

Queen’s Park took the lead in the fourth minute. Jamie McKernon swung in a free-kick and Bryan Wharton scored at the back post.

Brechin levelled just four minutes later when a Willie Dyer cross was headed down by Liam Watt and Ally Love smashed home an angled drive.

The hosts went close to taking the lead on 25 minutes when a shot from Love was deflected on to the post and behind by the foot of keeper Willie Muir.

The resulting corner brought the second goal. Watt sent in the flagkick and Dougie Hill powered home a header.

The home side looked for more as half-time approached and an effort from Finn Graham was saved, then on 42 minutes Andy Jackson fired an angled drive wide.

Right on half-time Jackson rounded the keeper and his shot towards the empty net was cleared off the line by Adam Cummins.

Brechin began the second half on the front foot and shots from Love and Graham were blocked by defenders.

On 65 minutes Love headed over from a Gary Fusco chip, and four minutes later Jackson beat two men only to see his shot deflected wide by Muir.

Queen’s Park battled to the end and in stoppage-time a header from Kalvin Orsi was saved by Graeme Smith.

Brechin finally clinched the points in the fourth minute of added time.

Watt ran at the Queen’s defence and passed for Jackson to beat a defender and score. Attendance: 393. Brechin: Smith, McLean, Dyer, Fusco, Hill, C O’Neill, Graham, Dale, Watt, Jackson, Love (Lynas 76). Subs: Caldwell, Rodger, McCormack, Ford, Dods, P O’Neill.
