Fife glass producer’s bright outlook

- ANDREW ARGO

Specialist Fife-based glass solutions firm Avtek has posted a turnover of more than £4 million in its second year of business and expanded its workforce from two to 27.

The Dalgety Bay company began work on its first order in January 2015 and reached a £2.4m figure from a standing start 12 months later.

As well as revenue of £4m last year, Avtek achieved a trading surplus of almost £70,000.

It has moved premises three times to meet its growing order book and, following major investment in plant and machinery, is now based in a state-ofthe-art building in the Hillend Industrial Estate.

Avtek has also opened an office at Maxim Office Park at Eurocentral to help it service the east and west of Scotland more effectively.

Avtek provides a niche glass solutions design, manufacture and installation service for a range of buildings.

Operations director Mark Lawrie said the company’s success was down to the experience of its team.

“We know precisely what we are going to do from the outset and we get on and do it,” he said.

“This, coupled with having first class people in key areas being given the chance to flourish, has resulted in an excellent start to the business and we will continue to push on from here.”

The company has worked on major contracts throughout UK, including projects at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh and at the £39m Forfar Community Campus .

A recent award was an eco-friendly student accommodation project at Durham University designed to dovetail with the green environmental policy of the establishment.

Avtek’s commitment to employing young people was recognised by a Skills Development Scotland Youth Employer award for its record in nurturing young talent and providing training opportunities.

It has six manufacturing, fabrication and installation apprentices and a business and administration apprentice.

Mr Lawrie added: “Hopefully they will go on to be the future of the company.”
