Man to appear in court over death of cyclist

54-year-old charged over road accident that claimed life of Cupar father-of-two

A man has been charged in connection with the death of a cyclist in Kirkcaldy last year.

Police Scotland confirmed that a 54-year-old man had been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and would appear in court next month.

It follows the investigation into the death of Cupar father-of-two Gary Christie.

Mr Christie, 38, was seriously injured when his bike was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Corsa on Carberry Road on November 1.

He died in Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital two weeks later.

His family has asked for privacy at this time. But shortly after Mr Christie’s death, they said in a statement: “Gary was a loving and devoted father to his two sons, Lewis and Ryan.

“He always put others first and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

“The family would like to thank staff at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, and the Western General, Edinburgh.”

Mr Christie was employed by NHS Fife and was cycling to his work at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy when he was struck shortly before 7am.

Instead of arriving for work, he was rushed to Victoria Hospital’s accident and emergency unit by ambulance, before being transferred to the Western General. The driver was not injured.

Following the incident, Police Scotland launched an appeal for witnesses.

Sergeant James Henry of Fife’s road policing unit said at the time: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Gary’s family.”
