Champions thrash Flyers

Devils too strong for Fife

- Nigel duncan

Champions Cardiff Devils last night hit Fife Flyers for six as they celebrated their first title win in 20 years.

The Scots were 3-0 down after 34 minutes, but Chase Schaber scored 50 seconds into the final session to give some hope.

Andrew Hotham, Scott Hotham and Layne Ulmer finished off Fife with three goals in six minutes.

Flyers had beaten Braehead Clan for the first time in the league this season on Saturday.

The sides were level at 1-1 after Schaber fired Fife ahead after 15 minutes and Stefan Della Rovere levelled in the 38th minute.

Mathew Sisca after 48 minutes and Russ Moyer with 35 seconds left secured the win.

Meanwhile, Dundee Stars remain in the play-off chase and received a boost when they beat rivals Manchester Storm for the second time in less than a week.

Stars had to come from 2-0 down to win 6-3 on Saturday, with Kevin Bruijsten netting a treble and Felix-Antoine Poulin a double. Justin Faryna was also on target.

Braehead Clan did the Stars a massive favour last night, defeating Coventry Blaze 5-4 in sudden-death overtime.

Coventry have suffered three straight defeats and are one point behind Stars – who have 44 points – but have only one game of the regular season left.

Stars have two, both against arch rivals Fife Flyers next weekend.

Manchester Storm also have two left, both against Nottingham Panthers, but they are on 41 points.

Edinburgh Capitals, who were edged out 4-3 at Murrayfield by Nottingham Panthers last night, can’t qualify.
