Trainees join Perth transport scheme

- Graham huband

A group of unemployed workers from Perth have the prospect of a full-time job in their grasp after being selected to take part in an intensive training scheme.

Perth Transport Futures Project (PTFP) contractor Balfour Beatty has taken on 10 trainees who will complete a six-week programme of training both on and off-site.

The initiative will see the trainees go through a full induction, a plant and people interface briefing, and a guided walk and safety presentation to highlight potential on-site risks and dangers.

They will also be paired with a mentor from Balfour Beatty who will help develop their skills on site.

The infrastructure giant – which is leading on both the PTFP and Almondbank schemes – said participants will have the chance to apply for a full-time role depending on their performance.

Hector Macaulay, Balfour Beatty managing director, Scotland, said: “This programme is another opportunity for us to support the local communities within which we operate, and help leave a lasting legacy through improved local employment and apprenticeship opportunities.”

A spokesperson for Perth & Kinross Council said: “Major infrastructure projects such as this are an important contributor to the local economy.

“Work-experience placements such as these create opportunities for local people to gain experience and skills to increase their chances for future employment.”
