National Gallery puts art lovers in the picture with new website

-

Tens of thousands of artworks are now available to view online after the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) launched a new website.

NGS officials said the move means the country’s 95,000-strong art collection is digitally accessible in its entirety for the first time.

About 40,000 high-resolution images, including all of the collection’s most significant artworks, are available to view online.

In addition, 25,000 highquality prints of newly-digitised works can now be ordered in a variety of styles and sizes and delivered in only a matter of days.

The website redevelopment is a step towards the National Gallery’s long-term goal of making its art available online to everyone.

NGS director-general John Leighton said: “We are absolutely delighted to announce the completion of this fabulous new site.

“We believe it will serve as a fantastic window to explore our world-class collection.

“It will also open it up as a resource for everybody to use, from leisurely enjoyment of the arts all the way through to academic research.

“The new features allow for a more accessible, engaging and exciting experience, and having the whole of the national art collection digitally available helps us to fulfil our firm commitment of delivering exemplary and engaging digital services to the public”.

Visitors should go to www. nationalgalleries.org to see the revamped website.

The National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh include the Scottish National Gallery, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Portrait Gallery.
