According to German papers, the Commander-in-Chief in Branderburg province has issued an order forbidding, in the interests of public safety in rural districts, townspeople from visiting the country to buy up foodstuffs. General Groener, Chief of the War Board, has also published an appeal to farmers, pointing out the very difficult position of the industrial populations of the towns, especially munition works, and entreating them to use every potato and turnip still fit for consumption.

Carnoustie, which has produced gold champions al, over the world, will rely on David Greig to fill a blank in the record book, when, for the second successive year, the 17-year-old pupil of Arbroath High School contests the final of the Scottish Boys’ Championship. Over 36 holes of the North Berwick West Links he faces Ian Cannon from Irvine. Greig lost the championship in foul weather a year ago to John McTear of Glasgow and in the interval has become a more complete player.

The people of Perth paid their last respects to a newly-born girl whose abandoned body was found in the city at an emotional church service. “Even in these materialistic times there is something in the human heart which responds to a tragedy,” Father Owen Reilly told mourners at St Mary Magdalene’s Chruch for the baby’s funeral. The church lies only yards from where the child’s body was found by a passing street cleaner. Father Owen said that compassion should be shown to the unknown mother.

Top young cyclists will descend on Perthshire for one of the best youth stage races on the calendar. More than 140 young cyclists in 35 teams from around Europe will compete in the fifth Scottish Cycling Youth Tour of Scotland. Teams of cyclists under the age of 16 will compete in the event, on closed roads around Perth.
