A popular venue

“It was interesting to read recently in the Courier’s 50 Years Ago an item regarding the Chamber of Commerce Club and the Panmure Suite which were located in the former Chamber Building in Panmure Street,” notes a former senior employee of the Dundee Chamber of Commerce.

“By spring 1971 membership had reached almost 800. New kitchens had also been installed in the historic premises which catered for a wide range of social occasions. The success of the club depended on its membership and the full use they made of it.

“It grew steadily and became a popular venue for business personnel and the general population of the city. Membership was open to Chamber representatives, directors, partners and principal officers of firms, companies and associations already members of the Dundee and Perthshire Chambers of Commerce and their respective Junior Chambers.

“Visitors could be introduced by members at any time during opening hours, subject to the club rules being observed. Members reaching the age of 60, having retired from business, were eligible to continue their membership.

“The Panmure Suite was also available for evening functions such as dinners, cocktail parties, dances, plus weekend wedding receptions.

“Mr A. S. (Andrew) Kyle mentioned in the item, in addition to having been President of the Dundee Chamber, was also chairman of the Scottish Export Committee and led a number of successful overseas trade missions to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.”
