Golf course thefts and fire-raising prompt Angus safety warning

-

Emergency services have put out an appeal for safety following a series of instances of vandalism at the world’s fifth oldest golf course.

Montrose Links has been plagued by vandals who have stolen equipment and started fires in the last fortnight.

On Saturday April 1, a significant number of the links’ fixtures and fittings were stolen, including six flags and flag sticks from the Broomfield course.

Two tee markers, 10 bunker rakes and one laser-cut tee marker were also removed.

On the evening of Wednesday April 5, a fire was started among gorse bushes.

This required the attendance of Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) and Police Scotland.

Angus station manager for the fire brigade, Graeme Hay, said: “During the holiday season and especially when there is dry weather, we can unfortunately see an increase in the number of deliberate fires.

“This illegal activity is not only reckless and dangerous but can divert SFRS resources away from genuine emergencies.

“However, through robust and flexible strategic planning, our crews are always ready to respond to any incident to keep our communities safe.

“But it’s important people understand the potential consequences of this dangerous behaviour.

“Fires not only put lives at risk but they can devastate homes, affect businesses and damage the local environment.

“We will continue to work very closely with all of our partners in communities across Scotland to reduce deliberate fire-raising.”

The appeal follows a number of incidents in Forfar since the start of the school holidays, including vandalism at the town’s former high school.

Anyone with information about deliberate fire-raising should contact the free and confidential Crimestoppers helpline on 0800 555 111.
