Added incentive for Geggan to win points

-

Andy Geggan has an extra incentive for helping Dunfermline finally rule out relegation – so manager Allan Johnston can get down to contract talks.

The Pars boss has been reluctant to open discussions with his squad over new deals while the club’s future in the Championship still hangs in the balance.

With an eight-point lead over bottom side Ayr United, and only four games remaining, the Fifers occupy sixth spot and can be confident of looking forward to another season in the second-tier.

But, still just six points above the relegation play-off place, skipper Geggan – one of the players in the final few weeks of their agreements – is keen to get the points required to secure safety.

Ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Dumbarton, he said: “I’m out of contract in the summer and we don’t know what’s happening.

“I think it’s just a case of getting safe, because the gaffer’s not spoken to any one of us. Hopefully we can get that sorted out and he can start speaking to players.

“We’ve got a big squad and if we can keep the same team then we could do well next season.”

Dunfermline knew a win over Dundee United on Tuesday would have given them an outside chance of still pushing the Tannadice side for a promotion play-off spot.

However, the 1-0 defeat means they are left to rue a start to the season that saw them win twice in their opening 13 league games.

With just three defeats since turning things around in November, Geggan says they are also regretting the dozen draws they have racked up along the way.

“There were a few new boys at the start of the season, to be fair, so we were just trying to knit together.

“It was a disappointing start, but the thing that has killed us is the number of draws we’ve had.”

He added: “If you look at the games that we have drawn and the likes of the defeat against Ayr recently, and others we should have won, it’s been disappointing.

“But I said we should try to just establish ourselves in this league because it’s our first one back in the division.”
