Petrie eyes top-four place

-

Montrose boss Stewart Petrie has switched his focus from League 2 survival to the possibility of playing in League 1 next season.

The Gable Endies have produced a superb late-season run, winning four and drawing one of their last five matches, including last weekend’s 1-0 defeat of leaders Forfar at Links Park.

That fine form has put them fifth in the table. They are just one point behind Elgin City, who occupy the last play-off position.

Petrie’s side make the long trip to Berwick this afternoon to play John Coughlin’s strugglers.

“We can’t hide the fact any longer that we are in with a shout, and that’s all credit to the boys and the run they have been on,” said Petrie.

“They have now given us an opportunity but we will just approach things one game at a time and see where it takes us.

“Berwick are fighting for their lives at the moment sitting second bottom of the league, but John will have them fired up for the game.

“We have a good away record this season but it is important that we come flying out of the traps.”

Callum MacDonald is struggling with injury for the game, while Chris Hegarty and Michael Bolochoweckyj are definitely out.

The latter had surgery this week after rupturing his achilles last Saturday against Forfar.
