100 years ago

A high infantile death-rate has frequently provided the opportunit­y of “showing up” Dundee. From Dr Templeman’s report for the past year it is gratifying to be able not to blame but to praise in this very important branch of social welfare, the number of deaths being the lowest yet recorded in the city. Dr Templeman reports that the number of infants who died in the first year of life was 470, giving an infant mortality rate of 126 per 1,000 births. The general death rate is also the lowest recorded.

The full impact of the new traffic control regulation­s for central Perth will be felt on Monday, when police and traffic wardens begin to enforce the requiremen­ts of the yellow kerb and carriagewa­y markings which have appeared during the last few weeks. Since the laying down of the lines, the police traffic department has had to cope with many injuries from road users not quite clear as to what exactly the various markings mean. They are, of course, statutory rights as explained in the Highway Code.

A host of well-known faces from TV’s Good Morning Britain will gather in Dundee in September for the wedding of television presenter Lorraine Kelly and her local boyfriend Steve Smith. Lorraine revealed her wedding plans to viewers yesterday morning. Speaking from her London home, she said that she and freelance cameraman Steve set the date just last week. The couple met six years ago when she was a reporter for TV-am in Glasgow and he was her cameraman.

An emotional reunion between a dog and his owner in Fife has been watched by millions around the world. Golden retriever Sandy sniffed out Maria Macioca from her hiding place and went berserk when the pair saw each other for the first time in seven months. Tear-jerking footage of the moment on social media has been viewed almost 27 million times. Fitness and life coach Maria has returned from her home in the US to visit her parents in Markinch and is stunned by the reaction.
