The best net score on the second day of the R&A Spring Meeting yesterday was 68 (81-13) returned by Jonathan Davie (Royal St George’s). At 70 years of age, this was a most notable addition to the clubhouse leaderboar­d. Patrick Hanrahan (4, Lindrick) and David Meacher (1, Sunningdal­e) returned the two lowest gross scores of the day, 75. The CSS yesterday was 73 (the same as for Monday). The Brazil Nut Cup nine-hole stableford competitio­n for members 70 years of age and over was played on the Strathtyru­m Course, St Andrews. Fifty-two members took part in the Nut and among their number were five past captains – Gordon Jeffrey, Sir Michael Bonallack, John Uzielli, Hamish Ritchie and Sir Paddy Hine. There were also three lady members – Angela Bonallack, Marian Rae and new honorary member Bridget Jackson. All were set on their way from the first tee by the Brazil Nut honorary starter, local member Gordon Mackenzie. The competitio­n was won by James Hardie with 27 stableford points. Anthony Shone was the runner-up with 26 points and was also awarded the Methuselah Trophy for the leading score by a competitor 80 years of age and over. Leading Brazil Nut Cup scores returned, were as follows: 27 points – JC Hardie 26 – AW Shone; 23 – IMT Sandison, KD Smith; 22 – KH Hogkinson, CI McAulay, GM Menary, Mrs MJ Rae.
