A car stolen and used in a break-in at a shop in Dundee on Thursday has been found – and is now being linked to an attempted raid in Dundee city centre.

The BMW that was used to ram the Co-op at Panmurefield Village was stolen from a home in Carnoustie in the early hours of Thursday morning, while the owner was asleep.

Police issued an appeal to find the missing vehicle after it was used in the theft, in which cigarettes and alcohol were taken, just after 4am.

The vehicle, which was found in the Happyhillock area of Dundee, has now also been linked to an attempted break-in – initially believed to have been a case of vandalism – at the Size clothes shop on the High Street in Dundee city centre.

The car was seen outside Size at about 3.50am on Thursday morning – shortly before the Broughty Ferry incident – with staff at the store arriving for work a few hours later to discover two front windows smashed.

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Wales said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident at Size in High Street, Dundee, which happened around 3.50am, or members of the public who saw the black BMW drive through the city centre at that time.

“Also, anyone who may have seen the black BMW travelling between Dundee city centre and Broughty Ferry at around 4am.

“I would like to remind the public that the registration mark of the BMW is N111 RNC.

“It is believed that the BMW travelled to the Happyhillock area immediately following the break-in to the Co-op at Broughty Ferry and I would appeal for anyone who may have seen the car either being driven or being parked in the area to contact Police Scotland.”
