Swifts boost survival hopes

Deserved win moves Jeanfield closer to safety

- PETER RUNDO

Jeanfield Swifts’ hopes of staying up were boosted by a 2-0 win at bottom club Fauldhouse.

That victory leaves them requiring four points from their four remaining games to rule out the possibility of even being involved in the play-offs.

There was no doubt it was deserved with goals from Daniel Kelly after 20 minutes and a superb Robbie Holden strike 10 minutes later sealing a huge win.

Hill of Beath confirmed their topflight status with a highly-impressive 3-0 win away at Broxburn.

All the goals came in the first half with a Greig Smith strike sandwiched between a Calum Adamson double.

Honours in the first Super League meeting between Lochee United and Broughty Athletic went to the hosts who deservedly edged out the Fed 2-0. Both goals came in the first half. Scott McComskie netted from a freekick after nine minutes and Kevin Buchan struck with a second 10 minutes from the break.

Hard as Broughty tried in the second half, the Bluebells still looked the side more likely to score.

In the Premier League Sauchie had to come from behind against Tayport at Beechwood Park, their 2-1 win taking them another step closer to promotion and probably the title.

Dale Reid gave the visitors an interval advantage with the opener after 37 minutes. Joshua Flood fired the hosts level and Darren Cummings notched the winner six minutes from time.

Downfield’s home defeat by Arniston was a fiery encounter which saw the Spiders finish the match on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline and with nine men.

Not that it started badly, Kieron Sturrock scoring after 30 seconds, but five minutes of madness just before the break proved pivotal.

An own goal, quickly followed by James Thomson’s dismissal for handball and a goal from the resultant penalty, meant Rangers led at the interval.

Jordan Timmons was red-carded in the second half and the visitors fully exploited their two-man advantage.

Violet’s hopes of avoiding the drop remain tenuously alive after their 2-1 victory over Haddington Athletic at Glenesk.

A terrific first-half performance earned the home side their first win of the year.

Goals from Ryan Dignan and Craig Batchelor saw them lead and, although Paul Devlin pulled one back, the Pansies held out for only their third win of the campaign.
