Shortlist to be drawn up to name coble boat at village entrance

-

A shortlist will be drawn up to name a boat which has been installed to promote an Angus fishing village’s treasures.

Ferryden is a historic fishing village and the placement of a boat at the entrance is the culmination of several months of work.

The iconic coble boat was donated by Usan Fisheries and was planted up with help from David Pullar of Pullar Horticulture near the Ferryden roundabout.

The community council has sent a letter of thanks to both Mr Pullar and Usan Fisheries “for their outstanding help in this”.

The next stage of the process is to name the boat and a number of suggestions have already been put forward.

These include Lily, Flecky, Scurdie Rose, Ferryden Spirit, Rio Southesk, Mucklerock Rose, Alice, The Burn, The Fisher Lass and Comfort.

A spokesperson for the community council said: “It is obvious from the letters given that there has been a lot of thought put into these names, and they represent either people or features of the village.

“The decision was that at our June meeting we will draw up a shortlist and then using social media or a voting system allow people to vote for what name they wish.”

Gordon Brown has been watering the plants in the boat and he is pleased to see the wild plants starting to come through the surrounding soil.

It is understood the local school will also be involved in the project.

Ferryden was once a major fishing port named after an ancient river crossing but by the 1920s the fleet was in serious decline and fishing had all but ceased by 1930.
