Cyclist’s praise for emergency response in wake of crash

-

An Angus cyclist has paid tribute to the emergency crews and medics who treated him after a dramatic collision.

Ali Simpson is now recovering at his Muirdrum home after being treated for injuries which included an arterial bleed following Monday night’s incident in Newbigging, where he smashed through the rear windscreen of a parked car.

The 57-year-old service manager was rushed to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, but the lead-up to the crash remains a blank.

Mr Simpson said: “I don’t really remember anything about it. I just remember cycling along and then waking up in hospital.

“I was wearing cycling sunglasses which I think dug into my face, and my cycling helmet. It could have been a low sun that evening.”

He was stabilised by Ninewells medics before a plastic surgery team worked on his injuries, with CT and MRI scans thankfully showing no serious problems.

Mr Simpson added: “The ambulance staff and hospital staff were really good to me and I can remember people helping me at the scene.

“The man whose car I hit was there too, and a nurse called Kelly.

“I don’t know the names of the ambulance staff and everybody at Ninewells Hospital, but they were really good.

“My wife Edwina is a nurse – but even she was given a scare when she found out I was in resuscitation.

I’m just glad I was wearing my helmet at the time. If I hadn’t had that helmet on it would have been a lot worse.”
