Established and aspiring bakers wanted by veterans’ charity

-

Bakers of all abilities in Angus and the Mearns have been encouraged to support a charity during a baking week this year.

Aberdeenshire charity HorseBack UK helps the wounded, injured and sick of the military community through inspiring recovery, helping them regain self-esteem.

A Baking Week from August 7 to 13 aims to raise funds for the charity.

HorseBack UK has been receiving continual support from Help for Heroes for seven years now, but it relies on public donations to raise more than 60% of its budget.

Fundraising manager Ian Wren said: “We are grateful for everyone’s donations, however big or small.

“We want to run the baking week to give all the budding bakers a common cause during one week where they can show off their skills, let their friends, family and colleagues enjoy their baked goodies and in the process, raise some money for the charity.”

Funds raised by all the bakers participating in the HorseBack UK Baking Week will go towards operational cost of the charity, such as transport, feed for the horses, veterinary bills, and catering for veterans.

The charity has been operating for over seven years and has helped more than 650 veterans.

As a result, 94% of HBUK programme participants have seen life improvements including better sleep, lifestyle, relationship, and reduced need for mediation.

Many have engaged in volunteering programmes and 17% have gone on to full or part time employment, while 11% have gone on to education.
