A taste of Highland fun will take over in Fife

-

Preparations are well under way for Cupar Highland Games, one of the highlights of the Fife town’s calendar.

The festival of Scottish sport will take place on Saturday June 10 in Duffus Park, with the focus on traditional events.

Cupar Highland Games date back to 1979, when they were established by former Scottish marathon runner David Lang and David Martin of Cupar Round Table.

From the outset, the games were established as an amateur competition, placing them in a popular minority among other Highland games.

It is an official SAF and SGA meeting and the organisers are members of the Fife Games Association and Scottish Games Association.

The action kicks off at 11.30am with the Parade of the Chieftains, officials and the Cupar Gala Kings and Queens.

Led by St Andrews Pipe Band, it will make its way from St John’s Church in the Bonnygate to Duffus Park for the official opening of the games at noon. This year’s chieftain, Elaine Brailsford, will have the honour of opening the games.

Contestants and visitors can look forward to a packed programme of traditional events throughout the afternoon, including field and track sports, heavyweight competitions, Highland dancing, Junior Highland games and a Land Rover Pull competition.

One of the highlights of last year was an international 400m race, which was very well attended and is back on the programme.

Organisers are still looking for entries for the Land Rover pull. Teams of four can enter for £10 and be in with the chance of winning £100.

It would be impossible to run a community event such as this without the generous support of local sponsors and businesses.

This year, the coffers have been further bolstered by a donation of £2,000 from the Tesco Bags of Help Scheme.
