Smith is hopeful of three signings early next week

-

Raith Rovers boss Barry Smith hopes to make three new signings at the start of next week.

The 43-year-old took over at Stark’s Park on Tuesday and has been working hard to bolster a threadbare squad.

Rovers only have seven first-team regulars still under contract, and Smith is looking to have his full roster in place before the start of pre-season.

“I have been in talks with players and we are close to getting three over the line,” he said.

“Lads are obviously on holiday at the moment but things have been agreed, and hopefully contracts will be signed at the start of next week.

“We also have lads already under contract and I expect them all to be there for pre-season.”

Smith has moved quickly to put together his back-room team. Firstchoice goalie Kevin Cuthbert and midfielder Scott Robertson are to take up player-coach roles, while Craig Easton remains in charge of the U20s.

Smith said: “Kevin and Scott will be player/coaches and will help me with training, while Craig will be in the dugout on match day.

“I know Scott well from Dundee when he was just a young lad but he now has loads of experience and is also going through his A licence, so this is a great opportunity for him to coach.

“I have played against Kevin and also managed teams against him.

“I have spoken to him about this new role and I think we will work well together.

“He will be a first-team coach, not a goalkeeping coach.

“Tommy Wright at St Johnstone is the perfect example of someone who was a goalie and became a really successful coach.”
