A flare for the 70s

Pinterest is the site where people love to lust over luxury. Gabrielle Fagan discovers its style winners and inspiring ideas

-

If you’re rocking a 70s vibe by piling on the pot plants for an outdoor/ indoor theme, working a boho look with a high-back rattan peacock chair, or keeping it simple with eco-friendly pared-back kitchen designs, then you’re ahead of the decor game. Those are the fashion-forward trends identified by Pinterest, the social media site where millions find inspiration for their homes. It recently revealed its Best of Pinterest UK Interior Awards, whose judges included designers Matthew Williamson and Kelly Hoppen.

Here are the key trends that emerged from the contest.

DREAMY AND DIY

Sustainable home decorating is on the rise, with Britons growing more confident and making the most of inexpensive materials. Plywood kitchens recorded 182% more Pinterest “saves” this year, while printed wallpaper was up 250%

Sustainable Kitchens is one of the companies specialising in eco-friendly design. Its kitchen, featuring plywood cabinetry, starts from £25,000 and was a runner-up for Best Kitchen.

IT’S ALL ABOUT SHAPES AND SIZES

Maths may not be your strong point but geometric shapes are essential if you want your home style to add up. Hexagons, herringbone tiles and circular mirrors are all winners.

Throw some shapes with Topps Tiles’ hexagon rustic travertinevtiles, £65.22 per square metre. Alternatively, show off all the angles with a green oversized geometric wall mural from Murals Wallpaper, from £25 per square metre.

BRING OUTDOORS IN

House plants – the statement of style from the late 60s and early 70s – are back in vogue. They’re particularly popular for living rooms and for conjuring an exotic, steamy atmosphere in a bathroom.

Talking of going green, classic Victorian green tiles are having a moment as the favoured choice for kitchens and bathrooms. Original Style has a square Victorian Green Field Tile, £84.95 per square metre.

TURN BACK THE CLOCK

Vibrant colour choices are also inspired by the 70s – think mustard, orange, greens and splashes of red. Shag pile rugs and record players are back too.

Lounge back in a Peacock Emmanuelle Armchair in Natural Rattan with its characteristic high rounded back, £654.50, Hutsly. Spin the vinyl on a GPO Ambassador record player, £110.

HOME FAKEOVERS

If you need savvy, temporary solutions to smarten a space reusable wallpaper (with 344% more Pinterest saves than last year) is a home decor

hero. Bulky wardrobes eat space but simple clothing racks, rails or ladder storage are slimmer, and will turn your favourite clothes into an eye-catching display. Turn on the style cheaply by jazzing up a room with new legs for a sofa or handles for cupboards, and use vintage trunks and baskets for storage.

INTERIOR LUST-HAVES

Some pieces just hit the right decor sweet spot and the outright winner of the Pinterest Lust-have award was a Loaf Thankster sofa, from £1,195, with the runner-up an Oliver Bonas luxe round bamboo drinks trolley, with marble top, £395. A Penn desk, £399, with matching wall shelves, £99, from Made.com won the best workspace idea award.
