A man has died after his car left the road while travelling through the Mearns yesterday afternoon.

It is understood that the male driver took ill at the wheel while he was on the A90 just north of Laurencekirk.

The 60-year-old man was behind the wheel of a grey Toyota Rav4 which left the dual carriageway shortly after 2pm. The vehicle then collided with a sign.

The Scottish Ambulance Service attended the incident and an air ambulance was called.

Eyewitnesses said he received emergency treatment from paramedics however he was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

The man has not yet been formally identified by police.

A woman who was a passenger in the car was uninjured.

Last night Police Scotland have appealed for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Sergeant Neil Grant said: “Our thoughts are with this man’s family at this very sad and difficult time.

“I would urge any drivers who were in the area and saw anything to please get in touch if you have not been spoken to by police already. Please call us on 101.”

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, which took place near to the junction with the A937.

The northbound carriageway of the road was closed to allow the air ambulance to land.

Southbound traffic was unaffected, but drivers were urged to proceed with care around the area by the emergency services. The road fully reopened at 6.15pm.
