Huge reaction to Syrian appeal

-

Brechiners have delivered their best-ever response to an aid appeal in support of the plight of Syrian refugees.

Local campaigner Irene Gillies has organised regular collections of goods, which are then transported to those in need by the Edinburgh Direct Aid charity, and the latest batch of support is now on its way.

Irene said: “There is a massive load of goods going to a village just inside the Iraq border where there are around 20,000 refugees. For such a small agency, Edinburgh Direct Aid is doing amazing work and once again the response from Brechin to support their work has been fantastic.”

She praised local removals man Phil Jamieson for transporting the Brechin donations which poured into the cathedral collection point.

“This is the third time Phil has taken our collection down to Edinburgh and he is always willing to help out.

“We were given so many donations, including three big sacks of night covers from a hotel, and another sewing machine, which is something we would look out for in future as it helps the refugees enormously.”

The next collection is already being planned for the autumn, and as well as the much-needed items required for winter conditions, Irene is hopeful locals will respond to the needs of refugee children.

“They are desperately needing school equipment such as jotters and pencils.”
